While serving the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills I contacted the local newspaper and asked to be included among the clergy who provided an article each week for the Religion section. That collection of articles linking current events with Unitarian Universalist values was published in 2011 under the title "From Headlines to Heartlines: Reading the News Through a Unitarian Universalist Lens". The book is available on Amazon and copies were sold that year at Pacific Southwest District Assembly.
Some of the topics covered include:
The book that I have not yet written (but for which I have already designed a cover) is entitled "The Reluctant Activist: A Compassionate Guide to Making a Difference". This book is based on a four-day workshop I lead at Camp deBenneville Pines in 2010, which was condensed into a 1-1/2 hour workshop at the 2011 PSWD District Assembly and the 2012 General Assembly.
The book was inspired by the frustration I have noted within many of my congregation's elders who feel called to work on behalf of justice and equity but feel powerless to do so - in part because they can no longer do the things they used to (like march in picket lines, chain themselves to bulldozers, etc.). And, because they have too narrowly defined "activism".
The workshops and the book (yet to be completed) seek to connect individuals with the realities of these troubled times, with their values, their passion (what it is they most care about), their strengths and their abilities. It, like the world we live in, is a work in progress...
